The fitment question

Why most suppliers can’t fit your car

The style is easy to find. Getting a set that actually fits your car is where people get stuck. Classic cars have a huge spread of bolt patterns and offsets, and plenty of them fall outside what a generic wheel supplier stocks. You find a wheel you love, then learn it doesn’t come in your car’s pattern — or the offset pushes it too far out and it rubs.

VTO drills and machines the wheel to your car’s specific bolt pattern instead of forcing you into an off-the-shelf one. Across bolt patterns, offsets and backspacing, that covers cars which stop other suppliers cold. Give us the numbers — or just the year, make and model — and we can usually tell you what will fit.

“No one else makes a wheel that fits.”

“Wider range of bolt patterns than most other manufacturers.”

Confirm your fitment

Find your car

Each page lists the sizes, bolt pattern and offsets confirmed for that model. If your car isn’t here, it usually means the fitment is a hard one — which is exactly the kind VTO already makes.

Don’t see your car? That’s usually a good sign. Call Alex on 866-855-3473 — he has helped thousands of owners spec a set — or send us your car details and we’ll come back to you with what fits.

New aluminum

Why not just buy original magnesium?

The originals were magnesium, and in period that was the right call. It’s light and it performs. The problem is age. A magnesium wheel that has been on the road — or sitting in a garage — for forty or fifty years is a different animal to a new one. Magnesium corrodes, it can develop cracks that are hard to spot, and finding a straight set in your size is a hunt.

Aluminum handles most of that. You get the same eight-spoke look and a light wheel with no age-related worry, because it’s new. One owner summed up the appeal of the finish in a single phrase: “light weight and not painted.” For most classic owners today, that’s the trade they want — keep the look you love without inheriting a decades-old wheel’s problems.

It is also worth being honest about what you give up, which is not much. A new aluminum wheel is not a period-original part, so a concours judge will know. For every other kind of classic car owner — the ones who drive them, show them, and race them — the aluminum wheels are the version you can put on the car and stop thinking about.

“The styling and finish on the VTO’s were substantially higher end.”

The lineup

Classic 8 — and the rest of the family

The Classic 8 is the closest match to the original eight-spoke minilite, and VTO’s most popular style. If the wheel in your head is the racing look from the ’60s, this is the one.

Buyer’s guide

What makes a wheel “minilite style”?

The look comes down to the eight-spoke design. It started on the racetracks of the 1960s, where lightweight cast wheels helped small British sports cars punch above their weight. The style caught on fast, and before long it was the wheel you saw under MGs, Triumphs, Lotus, and most of the grid. Sixty years later, it still reads as the classic sports car wheel.

One thing worth clearing up, because it trips up a lot of people: “minilite style” and the Minilite brand are not the same thing. Minilite is a real company with a long history. But the eight-spoke look it made famous is now made by several companies, VTO included. When someone searches for minilite wheels today, most of the time they want the style, not that one specific brand.

Which cars do minilite-style wheels fit?

Short answer: a lot of them. MGB and MGA. Triumph TR6, TR4, Spitfire and GT6. Datsun 240Z, 260Z, 510 and Roadster. Sunbeam Tiger and Alpine. Austin-Healey, Porsche 914, Lotus, BMW 2002, Corvair, Volvo — and dozens more. Where a car-specific fitment page exists, that is the fastest way to confirm sizes and offsets for your exact model.

The words owners actually use

If you have heard these wheels called “factory daisies,” “eight-spokes,” “8 spoke wheels,” “mini lite,” or just “the Classic 8,” you are already speaking the language. Plenty of owners search for “minilite replica wheels” as well. They are all the same family of styles, described by whichever name the owner met first.

The other phrase that comes up constantly is “period correct.” That is really what this whole category is about. Owners want a period correct look on a car they actually drive, without hunting down decades-old parts to get it — and new aluminum wheels in the original eight-spoke pattern are the shortest route there.

Same iconic look. New aluminum. Built to your specs.
