42mm Spline Drive Wheels for MG and Triumph

A spline drive wheel has no bolt pattern at all. It slides onto a splined hub and is held by a single center nut, the knock-off or spinner. "42mm" is the size of that hub. It is the hub size MG used on wire wheel cars.

These wheels are for owners who want an alloy wheel without giving up the splined hubs. Cars we fit:

The range is small and listed below. If your car is a wire wheel car not on the list, call Alex at 866-855-3473 before ordering.

Splined hub or studs? Look at the center

If your car has a large eared or octagonal nut in the middle of each wheel and no visible studs, it is on splined hubs. If it has four studs, it is on disc wheel hubs and these wheels will not fit. Disc wheel MGAs and MGBs are on our 4x4.5" page.

42mm, 48mm and 52mm

British wire wheel hubs come in three sizes. 42mm is the small one, used on MGs and smaller Triumphs. 48mm went on larger cars, and 52mm mostly on Jaguars. A wheel cut for one size will not go on another, and adapters between them are not something we recommend.

Check the hub splines before fitting

Splines wear. A worn hub lets the wheel creep against it under braking and acceleration, which you hear as a clunk when you pull away. Fitting new wheels to worn hubs wears the new wheels too. If your hubs have never been replaced, have them looked at when the wheels go on.

Hubs also come in short and long versions. Wider wheels are more likely to need the long hub, so tell us what is on the car.

Knock-offs are handed

The center nuts are made to tighten in the direction the wheel turns, so the left side and right side are different. Each one is marked with the side it belongs on. Swap them and they will loosen as you drive.

Should I verify my bolt pattern before ordering?

Yes, always verify your bolt pattern before placing an order. Vintage and classic cars can have unique or uncommon bolt patterns, and specifications sometimes varied between model years or production runs.
